Project Title

Access to dental care for working poor population in Quebec

Short Project Description

This study will investigate the working poor population’s perspectives and experiences in relation to dental care. This group is one of the most vulnerable in our society and is highly underserved. The ultimate goal of this research is to deepen the understanding of the working poor population’s perspectives on oral health care, which may result in an identification of the obstacles they face accessing oral health care, as well as cultural, social and economical factors that influence their perspectives. The results of this study may help policymakers and practitioners to understand the possible barriers the working poor has in accessing oral healthcare, and the reasons for avoiding access where it is provided at low or no cost. The methodological approach involves qualitative one-on-one interviews with working poor adults living in the Great Montreal Area.

This study has the potential for unveiling working poor population’s perspectives of general and oral health, and the links between these and the reasons why they may seek different pathways for dental care, which may ultimately limit their access to dental care. We thus expect to better understand the perspectives of the working poor concerning oral health care and access to professional services, and the results will help to effectuate changes improving the working poor population’s overall oral health. Our findings will also address the questions of ethics and social justice in the dental profession, both for dental schools and for health policymakers.
